Shepherds Bush market contains a myriad of goods, ranging from the exotic through to the everyday mundane. The market itself runs down a narrow viaduct, lined with old railway arches that now present themselves as lockups for the traders on the market.
The market began trading in the summer of 1914 and apart from a slight break during the First World War, is still running strong today with some of the best speciality Afro-Caribbean stalls in the west.
Running the distance between Uxbridge Road and Goldhawk Road there is a good selection of wares from fish through to fabrics. Mundane, but essential, household goods are easy to come by and new home owners or those with an insufficient 'bottom drawer' should make a bee line to the lock up where anything from crockery to linen can be picked up at a fraction of high street prices.
Clothing is a hot spot for Shepherd's Bush, with fabric and haberdashery bit's and bob's littering the market, alongside cheap clothing such as leather jackets, cheap shirts and beautifully embroidered African tunics and clothes. For the gent in your life, take the left hand split as you head towards Uxbridge Road, and there is a fantastic tailor selling a large stock of suits from £40 upwards.
The Afro-Caribbean influences run throughout this west London market, whether it be food, music or atmosphere. The availability of halal meat is high, along with sweet potato, yam, okra, green plantains and green bananas. The fishmonger stalls sell fresh exotic fish, while on the neighbouring stall you might find the dried version waiting to be snapped up.
This market has a down to earth, vibrancy about it, you feel as though you have stepped out of W12 for a few moments and into some other place.
